…“Baker’s Dozen” Anniversary for Bronx World Film

In Memoriam: Actor/Filmmaker César de León
Special screening of Salud and a tribute with friends
Our thirteenth anniversary January 21-23, Bronx World Film Cycle, Winter ‘24, flowed beyond film into performance, photography, fashion and other artforms as always, harking back to our heady early days. The cheerful screening room exchanges still echo in our ears as we share these images.
The Cycle this year brought home a clear sense of the international human network that we have been building; regions long in our sights finally landing on the marquee, ties old and new bearing fruit, an increasing presence at our events of the young audiences that our programming seeks to draw. Bolstered by that, in 2024 we pledge to our loftiest goals of building an institution for this day and age.
We also mourned César de León, fellow actor and filmmaker who we lost in 2023 and who we call a #culturalhero for his feature Salud, a soulful contemporary classic bridging New York and his ancestral Guatemala, and an apt standard-bearer of our work as pioneer of Central American arthouse in the US.
Salud, which César wrote, directed and starred in, is one of the most powerful father-son films you will ever see. It screened in our December, 2011 launch as feature entry for the US and Guatemala. We saw grown men leave the screening room to regain their composure before returning, eyes fast on this intimate, harrowing tale to its last frame.
The unrelenting struggles so many of us have faced in recent years kept me from saying my timely, proper good-byes to César, so we dedicated our Winter ’24 Cycle to him, screening Salud again and holding a tribute among friends and family on the Cycle’s closing night.
César and I met as actors shooting a short satirical video in New York City by Otto Cedeño, a film student then (around 2008) and a Central American. It was a fun (if unusual) outing for me as an actor. César and I bonded over our shared heritage and remained friends, our mutual respect growing after Salud graced our launch along with his presence.
As an Iraq war veteran, he witnessed firsthand the horrors of armed conflict today. Yet Salud springs from a sensitive, gentle soul. After 9/11, he dug through rubble doing recovery work on site, and was present at the Zucotti Park protests in Lower Manhattan. He lived his ethics.
Our world clamors for cultural heroes like César, as Central America clamors for its own. It certainly has found one in the devastatingly handsome César de León, who understood character and story arc like few and whose work in Salud is worthy of the highest awards. We miss you and hold you clos in heart and soul forever.
Tlacuilos premiering in the Bronx, after a tour of European festivals, is a lifetime event for several generations of Central Americans who took graffiti, molded into their own masterful form of expression, and speak to the world as never before.
Tlacuilos set precedents from its release, and as one of the young muralist masters says, “has done more to unite us than politics has ever done.” It casts a keen eye on contemporary Central American youth culture and will remain timeless.
Tlacuilos is not currently available for viewing online, however Bronx World Film continues to work with Director Federico Peixoto to bring it, along with our unique world film programs, to underserved communities. The boro’s lack of arthouse cinemas and scant support for such initiatives faces strong emerging alliances.
With the great diversity that marks our programming, Tlacuilos screened with unreleased short films by Tushar Waghela (INDIA) and Maria Hengge (GERMANY), as well as works by Yuzuki Tachibana (JAPAN), and Gregory Hernández (USA) with a trailer of his recently released documentary 1.5 Million, on the long-standing literacy crisis in The Bronx.

International Sound and Music Film Festival
Samobor, Croatia (October 2023)

Good fortune found me in mid-October of 2023 in Samobor, Croatia, on Zagreb’s westernmost edge, as a guest of International Sound and Film Music Festival. Dedicated to the oft-ignored creative wizards whose work connects audiences emotionally to the story, in eleven short years the festival has fashioned a singular international niche for itself while bringing to its magical 800-year-old host village a new dimension as a world art film hub. It’s a perfect match for a nation blessed with such a stunning range of musical expressions and traditions despite its relatively small size. The full story of my adventure there comes later this year on my personal channels. Here we spotlight the event writ large for its noteworthy contribution to the Cycle this winter and for the inspiration from a sister organization driven by a similar pioneering spirit to that which drives us.
The trip — my first to this part of the world — arose from my friendship with Executive Director Marijana Knezoci, which began on a bus ride from Genoa to Festival de Cannes in 2019. Our conversations over the years awakened affinities with her work, while sharpening a lifelong cultural curiosity about her homeland and region. In fact, filmmakers from Croatia (notably animators) and the Balkans have figured on the marquee since our founding, along with those from Albania and Kosovo who we seek out for the benefit of an important Bronx demographic. “The fruit drops from the tree only when it is ready,” as they say, and while it took a few years, I arrived on the crest of a wave, with the festival finally garnering accolades it has so richly earned, the small production team bursting with positive augury, and all the accompanying excitement of feeling this culture open its arms to the world.
When Marijana asked me to moderate the short film programme, I accepted without reservation. It gave me access to a full marquee of short films heavy on regional works and on Italian film, another of my lifelong love affairs, carefully chosen according with great respect for the art form. Like a greedy child in a candy shop, I brought back to the Cycle a veritable bounty of those films, and joked later with my hostess about poaching so many of her films. We both work for the advancement of this art form and its practitioners, so this was a natural development that can only signal promise for the future.
This gallery of screening room shots gives a sense of the range of films that came to us from ISFMF. We have the remarkable animated short Hope (Pero Petrušić, BOSNIA AND HERÇEGOVINA, HKUD Didak Productions), which follows a little girl through the years of World War I employing a “handmade” technique that seems to breathe life into a million daguerreotypes; Five Aunties (Sanjin Stanić, CROATIA), a music video of women in rural Croatia unburdening their spirits at the end of a hard day’s toil in the fields; the mercurial, alluring poetry of Albania’s Meri Dishnica, who screened three vastly different shorts and whose festival baby Bubbles we hope to screen soon; likewise the tender verse dramas registered as entries for Italy, Alessandro Carrieri’s But Alice Doesn’t Know All of This? in its world premiere, starring Ornella Muti, and In Plane Sight by Ben Gutteridge. Beyond the regional offering, ISFMF offered us the searing micrométrages of Tom Hartley, the astonishing tenderness of Arlette Zimmerman’s Intrusive, Bird of Paradise by Ruth Hesch and Andris Braeuer
I found myself rewarded with exactly the kind of fraternal treatment that we should be showing to each other at this moment

Dusk gives way to night and Bronx World Film Cycle, Summer 2022 sees up on its screen the brilliant palette of Tlacuilos, a film by Costa Rican director and DJ Federico Peixoto that has become a signature collaboration between perfectly matched partners.
As a Central American and as founder of an organization that has pioneered Central American art house here in the USA, hearing news in 2019, months before its release, of a documentary tracing the evolution of graffiti across the isthmus stopped me in my tracks.
One of the historic tragedies of the region that Central Americans call La Patria Grande, or “The Big Country,” has been the inability of its peoples to constitute a single entity or act in concert for the greater benefit of the whole. The very idea that someone would attempt to do something so comprehensive in film and succeed had me intrigued…
I reached out to Federico, and we opened a conversation that finds us, three years later, celebrating the film’s original release in Spanish. We screened the world English-language premiere at Bronx World Film Cycle Winter 2020, at La Nacional in Manhattan, and had the great honor of premiering it in The Bronx this past September 2022.

In Memoriam: Bboy Milo
Bboy Milo won the love and admiration of his peers as one of the pioneers who took Hip Hop all over Central America. He did not live to see Tlacuilos. Tragically, he disappeared in El Salvador years before its release. The movement considers him a martyr. Respect!
